Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections provide prolonged relief from pain associated with a range of degenerative joint and tendon conditions such as osteoarthritis and tendinopathies. The benefits can endure for up to a year. Additionally, this treatment can be supplemented with a course of focused shockwave therapy for optimal results.

PRP TREATMENT
London Bridge Regenerative Clinic

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections utilise the patient’s blood platelets to foster healing in wounds and soft tissue disorders, offering an alternative to surgery. These injections have proven successful in aiding the recovery of tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints.

Platelets are a vital component of blood, red blood cells, and plasma. The patient’s blood is drawn into a tube to administer PRP injections and then centrifuged to create platelet-rich plasma. This plasma, abundant in cytokines and growth factors, is subsequently injected into the injured area under local anaesthesia, sometimes guided by ultrasound imaging. The concentrated components gradually release into the injured area, promoting collagen development, which tightens and strengthens tendons and ligaments, ultimately facilitating healing.

SHOULD I CONSIDER ADDITIONAL INJECTIONS?

If you experience benefits from PRP injections, you may opt for further treatments. Studies indicate that the effects of PRP typically last for about a year. Consequently, some patients choose to undergo a series of 3 PRP injections annually if they continue to find them beneficial.

The majority of individuals undergo PRP injections without experiencing any adverse effects.

The primary side effect to be aware of is the post-injection flare, as previously mentioned. Other risks and side effects are exceedingly rare and are detailed at the conclusion of this page. Should you desire further discussion on any of these concerns, we encourage you to reach out to your treating clinician before your appointment. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to address any questions or concerns in greater detail on the day of your appointment.

Some discomfort may be experienced during the injection process, but often it is less severe than anticipated. Following the injection, you may encounter pain at the site for 1-2 days. Post-injection flare could persist for 2-3 weeks.

While undergoing PRP injections, you can continue taking other medications. However, it’s advisable to refrain from using NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or naproxen) for one week prior to and two weeks following your treatment, as this may potentially diminish the efficacy of the PRP injections.

Within 4-5 days post-treatment, a slight reduction in swelling, stiffness, and pain can be anticipated. While some individuals may experience diminished  discomfort within 1-2 weeks, most patients typically notice pain relief between 4-8 weeks following the procedure. Significant pain reduction may take up to 12 weeks.

For optimal recovery, it’s recommended to limit activity levels for 14 days post-treatment and follow your bespoke rehabilitation programme.

PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) INJECTION

Harnessing the power of your own body, PRP offers a revolutionary approach to alleviating joint pain and tendon issues. This autologous protein solution treatment is tailor-made to address your specific needs, providing targeted relief and restoring comfort and mobility to your daily life. Say goodbye to discomfort and embrace a future of greater freedom and vitality with ultrasound-guided PRP injections.

Following the injection, many patients may experience some discomfort for a week or two, known as ‘post-injection flare.’ This discomfort is typically temporary and does not indicate that the PRP injection won’t be beneficial once the initial discomfort subsides., which may result in some soreness at the injection site for a day or two.

We would normally advise staging in the clinic for about 15 minutes after the injection, you can then get on with your normal activities as normal.

We recommend relative rest for 5-7 days following the injection and avoiding strenuous exercise for the first 5 days, even if you feel comfortable. If the injection targets a tendon, you may be advised to refrain from heavy impact and loading activities for two to three weeks, as injections around tendons are more likely to induce post-injection flare, which may last longer.

Typically, PRP treatment involves a series of three injections, spaced two weeks apart. If you’re still experiencing post-injection flare at the two-week mark, the next injection may be postponed for an additional two weeks. We may also recommend a course of focused shockwave which complement the injections.

It is important to follow your clinician post-procedure instructions carefully and attend follow the knee rehabilitation programme.

YOUR SIMPLE 4 STEP JOURNEY

Step 1. Free Intial consultation

London Bridge Regenerative clinic gives every patient a free consultation with one of our injecting practitioners.

There is no obligation to proceed to treatment. The consultation is an opportunity to discuss your issue in detail and the benefits and risks of the procedure.

Platelets play a crucial role in clotting and contain high levels of growth factors, which regulate inflammation and healing. Injecting platelet-rich plasma into joints or tendons prompts the release of these growth factors, enhancing the local environment and reducing pain. However, despite being termed “regenerative therapy injections,” there’s no evidence that PRP actually regenerates tissue or heals tendon or joint issues.

STEP 2. MEET YOUR PRACTITIONER

We will allow time to find out more about the procedure, understand the advantages and risks with the procedure, and to give time for you to ask questions We may need to refer you for an MRI

We  will then take your medical history, examine which may include diagnostic ultrasound then proceed with the guided injection.

STEP 3. PREPARATION FOR THE INJECTION

You’ll be given individual pre-injection advice to reduce your chance of bleeding or infection and support your recovery and aid healing

It’s important to let your practitioner know if you’re on any prescription or over-the-counter medications. You may be asked to stop taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory tablets, which can increase the risk of bruising. It’s also important to stop smoking cigarettes and e-cigarettes before and after the procedure because they can disrupt the healing process.

Local anesthetic is not needed for this procedure and the procedure is tolerated very well.

STEP 4: RECOVERY AFTER STEM CELL INJECTIONS

Following the procedure, most individuals can return home and resume their normal activities. Our clinical team will be available to offer water and provide guidance on post-injection care.

For the next twenty-four hours, it’s advisable to refrain from strenuous activities and alcohol consumption. Don’t be alarmed if you don’t notice immediate effects; it typically takes around five days for the injection to take effect, with the full results becoming evident over the course of several weeks.

A follow-up appointment or phone consultation will be scheduled for 12 weeks after the course of treatment to review the progress.
